Item 3 Description: Cup'ik Culture

What is this item? Describe it. What did you do? Why did you do it? Who did you work with? Include any information the viewer needs to know in order to understand what it is.

These are photos I have taken of many Cup'ik crafts such as masks, baskets and dolls. It also includes the Cup'ik values that appear in many classrooms in the school, and that you observe people following all the time. I was taught how to weave a traditional grass basket and how to make a fishing gig called a manuq. I learned a dance, also watched some more professional dancers. I read "The Cup'ik People of the Western Tundra" by the facilitator John Pingayaq, which is an overview of Cup'ik culture.

Lesson #3: Culture To learn about Cup'ik culture, including dance, masks, crafts, values, philosophy, social roles, subsistence, festivals, etc.
